Collaborations to Promote Health

We Collaborate with Organizations to Improve Health Care Across the State

To help improve the health and well-being of New Jersey residents and communities, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey supports and collaborates with organizations across the state.

For example, we have been an active supporter of the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey (SHCCNJ) since 2006. It is the largest chamber organization in the state with more than 3,000 active business members. The mission of the SHCCNJ is to provide leadership and promote the continued growth and development of New Jersey’s economy through their business networks, while upholding the highest standards of conduct and excellence among its members.

While the focus of SSCCNJ is on business, its activities extend to health promotion and education.

Our support of the SHCCNJ has included a grant from our foundation, The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, as well as sponsorships for Chamber events. To date, we have provided $176,900 in support.

The Foundation provided SHCCNJ with a $100,000 grant in 2007 to produce a health documentary for the Latino community.Su Salud Primero/Your Health First examines the health issues, barriers to health care, and preventive and wellness programs available to New Jersey's Latino residents.

The documentary was produced by New Jersey Network (NJN) television and hosted by ABC television anchorman John Quiñones. It originally aired on the network on November 13, 2008 and has been rebroadcast many times since. It has received broadcasting awards including the Public Service in Television award from the Philadelphia Press Association and a Mid-Atlantic Emmy in the Community Service category.

The documentary was well promoted. New Jersey Network produced television and radio spots and issued publicity cards, posters, flyers and e-blasts to promote viewership. ABC also publicized the documentary. Promotion of the program also included a robust bi-lingual web site and educational flyers that were distributed at Hispanic community events throughout New Jersey. Producer/Director Willie Sanchez and Hispanic Youth Showcase contestants also reached thousands of individuals by displaying a Su Salud Primero/Your Health First banner at parades and other events. A premier screening for legislators, media and the general public was held at the NJN studio.

In addition to the Foundation grant, SHCCNJ has received $76,900 in sponsorship awards. Beginning in 2006 and continuing every year thereafter, Horizon BCBSNJ has been a sponsor of the SHCCNJ’s Annual Convention & Expo. We have also supported the Chamber’s scholarship fundraising galas.

We are proud to support such an outstanding organization and we look forward to our future collaborations.
